Geocaching

Muggled: Geocache #1 GCTZYA

posted May 17, 2010 4:14 AM by Ganesh App

Right after the Ultimate Frisbee game on Saturday, I headed out to Cubbon Park, with my new GPS toy (Garmin Geko 201). After scanning the place for more than half an hour and attracting a wide audience, when I jumped over the fence to study the water tank area, I concluded that the geocache was plundered.

So my first geocache hunt was unsuccessful. But heck, I am no longer going to do such public geocaches. I will stick to the traditional hike and seek caches.

Seek: Geocache #1 GCTZYA

After a fair bit of searching around, I found there are 3 location in and around of Bangalore where the caches have been hidden. Two of them are close by. The ones hidden at Cubbon park and Lalbagh.

I have lived in Bangalore for about a year and I haven't visited these two parks yet. So this is a good incentive for me to go check them out. A good friend of mine, Arun, has promised to lend me his GPS unit (Garmin Geko 201). Once I pick it up, I will try my luck with the Cubbon park geocache first.

The geocache GCTZYA is located at N 12° 58.447 E 077° 35.431 and is a micro-cache. So no treasure inside it.

I just can't wait for the weekend. :D

Geocaching

Quite recently a good friend of mine, Jump, tweeted about geocaching. The moment I read about it, I was hooked to it. Within an hour I had read through the wikipedia article on the same, gone through every tutorial/info that was up on the geocaching.com website.

I even registered myself at geocaching.com, completely resigned to the notion that India, the country I reside in, might not even have a single geocache. I was more kicked about the idea of hiding the cache for others to find. I travel and trek quite a bit. Hiding a box with goodies and a log book seemed like a purpose to conquer those peaks once again.

To my surprise I found 88 caches in India. Compared to Singapore (the size of an Indian city), which has over 200 caches, 88 for such a huge country is a joke. But, I still am impressed.

I plan to log every caches I find and I hide in this space.
