North East

Nagaland

posted May 20, 2010 2:32 AM by Ganesh App

Nine hours before I set for this trip, Phejin contacts me. This must be my lucky week I think.

Phejin is from the Konyak Tribe. The tribe is famous for its tattoos. I had pinged her long back asking her if we could stay with the tribe and learn about their culture, before it is wiped off the face of this earth. I didn't get any reply. I gave up on the idea of Nagaland later. With the political tension I didn't want to risk checking out war cemetries in Kohima.

But after speaking to Phejin for about 20 minutes, I have decided I will take the risk of going to Nagaland. I won't be checking other parts of Nagaland though.

Now I have to figure out how to fit this into the itinerary. I am not sure Arpit will travel with me to Nagaland. So That means, we will have to split up and then join again.

Guwahati (1 day) -> Shillong (1 day) -> Tripura (3 days) -> Mizoram (3 days) -> Meghalaya (31, 1) -> Assam (transit) -> Nagaland (2,3) -> Assam (4).

But that will be cutting it too close. I have to drop a day in one of the states. Man everything is so messed up because of the Manipur-Nagaland border tension.

North East Trip

About a year back Spencer told me about the Dylan Festival that takes place in Shillong (Meghalaya) every year. I had decided then, that I would at least attend one of them sometime in my life. Thanks to my impulsive nature, it has happened so quickly.

Arpit, whose travel ideas I keep flicking (China, Bhutan etc.), is also coming along with me. I will also be bumping into Carly (my Madhya Pradesh trip partner) and Vy (fellow Bangalore Frisbee player, who has baked me a lot of cakes) during the trip.

We will be reaching Guwahati on 23rd morning and we will be spending the day/night at Altaf's place. Altaf is a filmmaker who has made many films and some of the Assamese films are even listed on imdb. We found him via CouchSurfing and he has kindly agreed to host us at his guest house. We aren't planning to spend much time in Assam. Our rough itinerary seems something like this:
Meghalaya:

Dylan Festival
Umium Lake (Bara Pani)
Mawsynram
Mawjymbuin cave
Nohkalikai falls
Mawlynnong

Tripura:

Agartala
Ujjayanta palace

Kamala sagar lake
Sipahijala wildlife sanctuary
